Inspiration from Medieval Zionism in the face of Global Anti-Zionism

A message for Tisha B’Av

Ira Green, CEO of the World Zionist Village

In recent years, the world has witnessed a disturbing rise in antisemitism and anti-Zionist rhetoric, often blurring the line between criticism of Israeli policy and the delegitimization of the Jewish people's right to self-determination. From campus protests to international forums, Zionism is frequently mischaracterized as a form of colonialism or racism, stripping it of its historical and spiritual roots. This climate leaves many Jews—especially younger generations—conflicted about how to defend their connection to Israel in a morally grounded way. As we approach Tisha B'Av, the day marking the destruction of the Temples and centuries of Jewish exile, it is an especially meaningful time to revisit the ideas of Yehuda HaLevi, a medieval thinker who gave profound expression to the longing for Zion.

Yehuda HaLevi’s Kuzari provides a powerful philosophical foundation for Zionism that remains deeply relevant today. In the dialogue, HaLevi argues that the Jewish people can only reach their full spiritual and national potential in the Land of Israel. Exile, though a reality of Jewish history, is seen as an unnatural state—one of disconnection from divine influence, prophecy, and peoplehood. This idea gives modern Zionism more than political or historical justification; it gives it spiritual and existential meaning.

In a world where Jews increasingly face delegitimization, HaLevi’s teachings remind us that Zionism is not just about borders or power—it is about restoring a people to its spiritual home. In the face of hate, his vision calls Jews not to retreat, but to deepen their commitment to Israel as both a refuge and a renewal of national purpose.

To explore these ideas further and take part in shaping Zionism’s future, the World Zionist Village will offer a growing space for education, dialogue, and connection. Programs at the Village will bring us together from around the world to reflect on Jewish peoplehood, the meaning of Israel, and the challenges ahead. It will offer an innovative global hub rooted in our historic bond with the land. Especially during this season of mourning and renewal, the prospect of the Village will inspire learners and leaders to come together and build a shared vision for a meaningful Jewish future in Israel and beyond.
